Wycombe 3s turned up to a chilly BRN for a crucial contest between 2nd and 3rd place in the league. Wycombe are a decent side with a mixture of youth and experience, who were promoted with us last year so we were relatively familiar foes.
We welcomed Big Dog out of retirement as Lawrence cried off sick at last minute, and Nick Lamb with his first game since young Henry came into the world. We started well, scoring in the first few minutes and continued to play some really good hockey throughout the 70 minutes. We definitely scored at the right points in the match. We essentially did the simple things well; passed and moved, avoided contact and were patient at the right times. As a result we created a lot of chances and in truth with a little more composure we could have had a few more - no names mentioned! It is great to see a contribution from our entire forward line with Brett, Nathan and Robbie all scoring as well as the evergreen Simon Dawson. Dave Springer and Tom Forrester were all over the park and had their best games of the season. Charlie didn't put a foot wrong all game until the ice tackled him in the corner.
Defensively it was great to have some defenders back in the form of Ben and James and Wycombe were relatively kept at bay. Also note to self that when you keep telling Ben not to chuck aerials and advise Tim to practice them that it is probably best that you get it right when you do one yourself.
So lets make sure we enjoy our victories, as apparently we all looked a bit down after the game! Not forgetting of course that next week starts at 0-0 and against our local rivals Oxford, so I am sure we will be in for a competitive game.
MOM goes to Robbie Scragg for doing what a Scragg has been nurtured to do - finishing with a tap in at the far post. But overall he had his best game, linking play well and making the right decisions with the ball. Keep on running to that far post...
Thanks to Hugh and Dave for umpiring.
