It was refreshing that for once the 7th XI players all knew each other, such is the size of the squad and we lined up with a team of equal mix of 'old and should know better' and youth.
Aylesbury are bottom of the league but had managed a 1-0 win over league leaders Maidenhead the week before, so we weren't sure what we would be facing. We again shored up the defence with Dunn and Stoker, Venables as centre mid and Henman and Gordon as half backs. Black snr marshalled the juniors upfront, comprising Brad F, Charlie C, Jack O'D, Freddie S, Jamie W and Ollie W. Will Hackett kept goal this week and whilst he had a relatively quiet game he made some important save at the right time.
Hawks were stronger but we couldn't build effectively in attack and resorted to our hit and hope tactics. We had good spells of possession and territory but were often caught on counter and frequently saved by Dunn's intervention. We had several short corners and near goals from Gordon but just couldn't convert.
Half time talk saw something of a 'light bulb' moment. After general captains comments about passing, basic ball control, tracking back.....Henman pipes up 'we can do this lads, if we start to pass the ball and build down the wings.' General silence from the rest of the team followed by laughter...could 'Aerial Mike'/ 'King of the long pass' change his game..?
2nd half started brighter despite big gaps in defence but Hawks had several close chances with a few more short corners. Jack O'D nearly got a spectacular deflection as he was tumbled by the keeper but the ball just went wide. The goal eventually came from a Henman drag flick ....we will never hear the end of it.....and a 2nd coming from a Freddie Sunderland strike. Freddie was my man of match for his industry up front and sealing the win.
It was a good win which puts us upto 4th in the league. Hopefully next week we can start the game in a more assertive frame of mind rather than pushing through in the 2nd half.
