Part of the compromise to play a high standard hockey at this level is that there is a bit of travelling to do. So thank you to all the parents who ensured we had 14 boys all prepared to play a game vs Oxted.
A game of 2 halves really. We played 4 in midfield, saw more of the ball and dominated the exchanges in the first half with Toby and Ed combining well in the central areas. Toby opened the scoring with what he would admit was a slightly fortuitous backhand, which was going wide until the keeper intervened. Oxted played mainly on the break and equalised with a ball into the D which was dispatched first time. Ollie Graham provided a clinical finish to make it 2-1. However Oxted repeated the first effort with another strike into the D which was deflected around the keeper. We continued to create chances and OJ provided the coolest finish of the day to slot it past the keeper into the corner. So 3-2 at half time and we had played really well.
The second half started well with some great passing around the back from Ollie and Tom, but we became a little defensive and invited pressure onto our defence. Oxted pushed up and filled the gaps in midfield and created a number of chances. They equalised and then found the net again with 10 minutes to go and were leading 4-3. This galvanised our midfield and Toby lead the way and could have had a penalty flick when upended by the keeper (who was the umpire - well that would be your coach...). We continued to push forward and a late penalty corner was deflected in by Laurie to make it 4-4.
A great team effort to come back, and the boys had a really great attitude to the game and to each other. Always work to be done on the simple things such as ball retention, passing and working off the ball but a deserved point. Man of the match goes to Ollie Webb at sweeper who made some great tackles and interceptions.
