After a shaky first ten minutes, with Abingdon breaking quickly and looking dangerous, it became clear we needed to use our skill and pace against this physical team.
Our forwards and inners were attacking the D hard but it took a while for us to find the back of the net. Finally, Emma Milne took advantage of a rebound and slapped the ball in to take us 1-0 up. We then began to make the most of our chances and Buffy made it 2-0 by half time.
Jacqui's advice from the sideline and helpful team talk made us realise that we were only 2-0 up, with a quick break, Abingdon could be back in the game; and ironically, that's exactly what happened. Within the first five minutes of the second half, the opposition took advantage of a gap in our marking and press and made it 2-1. However, that's when we really woke up and upped our game. Goals quickly followed from Megan and Lotty which took us to 4-1. Our backs, Zara, Becky and Blanche held strong, allowing us to continue to move forward. Finally, a lovely cross from Lotty allowed Emma H to slot it in back post which brought the final whistle to 5-1.
Abingdon were a very physical team (thanks to Linda for wearing one on the shoulder!) and having 3 strong players, Sophie T, Sophie D and Emma Milne down from the 4s really helped us to keep the intensity up until the final whistle. Player of the match votes were tied between Milly and Emily T, with the deciding vote going to Emily T for her sheer determination in tracking back and tackling as well as great skills while going forward.
Great teas and great cake from Jen (and her Mum!) meant we all went home in high spirits and looking forward to a home match next week. And of course, Susan's return!
