With a squad of 14 for Saturday's game away to Phoenix & Ranleigh at Reading University, Hawks 3's were again feeling confident of adding another win to make it 2 wins in 2 weeks.
Just as well the match was played away as the hockey on display was not the finest game to watch......any supporters watching would've been wise to either read the morning paper or find an alternative sport to watch at Reading University campus. Phoenix & Ranleigh employed a half court press resulting in Hawks having the freedom and space to move the ball around. However, since the opposition tactics were to crash the ball through means of "Route 1" in most phases, including into the D, Hawks were mostly unsettled in the first half, unable to play their fluid style of passing, possession and attacking hockey. James Ward opened the score with a fine individual effort passing a couple of players into the D before striking the ball sweetly into the goal. The lead was quickly reduced just before half time by Phoenix from a short corner.
Hawk's needed to re-address things in the second half, however the same pattern of play ensued and with the watching public flooding back after half time, Adam Scholey picked the ball up from Thomson Harris in the far left corner, dinked the ball with a series of "keepy uppys" past a couple of defenders across the goal line before neatly slotting home to make it 2-1.
Nothing much happened for the rest of the second half.......with the exception of Phoenix almost levelling the score by (no surprises) crashing the ball from the right hand side across the goal begging for a simple tap in to make the scores level. Cue a few relieved faces from Boggsy, Sean Maclachlan, Jonny Florey, Andy Argyle, Torbjorn Turland.....basically the back 4!!!
Nevertheless, a win is a win no matter how ugly the game is. Hawks 3's are now joint second on 6 points with two other teams in MBBO Region 2......still a long way to go!
