The Ladies 2s were expecting a really tough game against Spencer 1s and were immediately on the back foot from the first whistle. However Linda Billington made some great saves early on in the match to keep the score at 0-0. Hawks began passing the ball and were rewarded with some free hits around the D but the Spencer defence worked hard to keep the ball out.
Spencer 1s took an early free hit and were very quickly in Hawks D, this time they succesfully converted the chance. With the score at 1-0, Hawks were more determined to get the ball in the Spencer D but struggled to play a string of passes and weren't playing their normal passing hockey. Spencer took advantage of this and scored a further goal, making it 2-0.
Hawks were awarded a penalty corner after some great work from the forward line. After a left slip to Kasey Butler, she went round one player and calmly played the ball over the keeper and into the back of the goal. This gave the 2s some confidence and some good hockey followed. Claire Werlinger used her speed and skilful ways to get into a 1v1 with the keeper and was unlucky not to get more from this.
After some half time wisdom from Mrs Sue Clark, the 2s started the 2nd half very positively and passed the ball up the pitch into the Spencer D with some great movement from Kike Lawal and Sam Hodges. Kasey worked really hard to get into a really good position in the D but unfortunately she was unable to add to her goal tally.
Spencer continued to put a lot of pressure on Hawks throughout the 2nd half but man of the match, Linda kept Hawks in the game by making a number of vital saves. Unfortunately, the game finished 2-1 but Hawks 2s look forward to playing against Surbiton 2s next weekend!
