Two junior players made their league debut for Hawks 3s on Saturday vs Newbury & Thatcham 1s (Lovibond & Harris) and along with two other juniors who played for the 3s last season (Florey & Webster), they were comfortably able to meet the demands of a mens league game.
Newbury got off to a quick start scoring two goals in open play before Gallacher brought one back for Hawks with a deflected goal at the far post from a strike at the top of the D to bring the scoreline 2-1 at half time.
Determined to try and bring the game back level after half time, Hawks made a good start to the second half but their efforts were once again undone by Newbury scoring 3 goals from open play early in the second half, with one shot rebounding straight back from the post for their player to slot in past Tom Biggs. With many Hawks players new to the team and out of regular positions, it was going to be difficult for Hawks to level the scoreline. However, Hawks showed phases of play during the match that had made them champions for the last two season and in one of these phases, excellent work down the left side by Florey & Lovibond led to Jamie Clark scoring a breakaway goal by going around the Newbury keeper to slot home in the bottom left corner. A further two goals from Newbury brought the final result to 7-2.
A disappointing result to the opening league game of the season but there were many positives to take away from the game, plus some good individual performances from the players that will only improve as the team has more game time together during the season.
