Another one bites the dust after a solid performance from the L4s

Ladies' 4s 3 - 1 Abingdon Ladies 1s

The Seven Seas of Rhye were lashing down on the Hawks home ground as they took on Abingdon in their 3rd match of the season. Warming up it felt as though the better option would be to acquire a boat and Sail Away Sweet Sister, however notable observations were made at the lack of team warm-up by the opposition and it was decided to stay at the Seaside Rendezvous and face Abingdon.

Pre-match team talk focused on the best form of defence being to attack, and Hawks made that clear from the start. With A Kind Of Magic being spun around Abingdon, Laura sped through the flailing sticks and, using The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke from the edge of the D, put Hawks 1-0 up within two minutes. The Body Language from the opposition made it clear they were not expecting this level of form from a team who had only just come up to the league. Hawks used this to their advantage to put the defence Under Pressure, but despite some beautiful passes across the goal from Rebecca, failed to convert. Abingdon started to Play The Game and attempted to threaten the Hawks defence. However Becky, Phil and April held firm. Vicky, Lucy and Caroline Baggs kept dancing The Millionaire Waltz to move the ball through the forward line even though they often had to call on The Hitman to stop the opposition getting pass.

‘Don’t Try So Hard to force the ball through’, and ‘the goals will start Coming Soon’ were some of the points to note from the half-time team talk, though emphasis was put on the fact that there was only One Vision of the outcome of this game...

Unfortunately Hawks did their usual of going all a bit Radio Ga Ga and allowed Abingdon back into the game. As they started to Misfire, Abingdon pushed hard up front bringing Olivia into the game as the ball shouted ‘Save Me from the net!’. Hawks often turned on their heels to Breakthru and run Headlong to goal, but to no avail. Sophie B, Sophie D and Gabs were like the Princes(ses) Of The Universe as they were told to Spread Your Wings as they were Ride-ing The Wild Wind up front to get that elusive goal. As the tension increased, there was a Scandal as Abingdon scored to bring the match level with only fifteen minutes to go. However it was as if Hawks were waiting for the Hammer To Fall and they turned up the pace in the Bicycle Race. Catherine signalled it was time for the Dragon Attack and Hawks powered forward. Caroline Batten and Sophie T worked tirelessly in feeding the forwards, and during a mad scramble, Caroline popped the ball out to Rebecca who twizzled and scored. With five minutes on the clock Hawks broke from their D, and as Laura cried ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, Abingdon obeyed, letting her through to their D to win a penalty corner. As the ball came out, there was a Flash of green and black as Rebecca’s stick swept round, and with a bijou of a deflection from Gabs, Hawks were now in full command.

‘Was It All Worth It?’, asked chief supporter Jane through the pouring rain, as Another One Bites The Dust. Most definitely as Hawks start dreaming that We Are The Champions...

Laura was voted the Killer Queen due to her opening goal and supporting play.
