Men's 4s win at Northampton with strong second half

27 September 2014, 14:00

Men's 4s 5 - 2 Northampton Saints Mens 4s

Having taken all week to select a side and determine how we were going to get there we made the long trip to Northampton for our final pre-season friendly with a squad of 11. We welcomed newcomer Andy Argyle from Cambridge and Lawrence McCabe from Brookes in between the sticks. They wouldn't have been impressed with the first 10 minutes as we consistently failed to stop the ball and our passing managed to find the opposition with regularity. It was no surprise to find ourselves 1-0 down from a short corner. We began to find our feet and Robbie Scragg equalised with a well taken deflection and Chris Larner bundled one over the line. Nick Mahon pulled a fetlock and we were down to 10 for the rest of the half. Northampton then deflected one past Lawrence at the end of the half leading to strong protests from Gary Mahon who didn't seem to want to accept the offer from the umpire to discuss it after the match.  A few tactical changes were made at half time and Lawrence also pointed out that the forward line could try hitting the target (I think that was directed at the skipper who was leading the line for the first and hopefully last time). We scored three well worked goals through Rob Oldershaw, Gary Mahon and David Cooke and ran out 5-2 winners. Nick hobbled his way through 35 minutes and his dad ignored him on his way to his goal, when really his son was the better option. Andy Argyle looked a find at left half, even throwing in an aerial on the backhand which lead to a goal (I am not sure he meant it). James Holder was my man of the match for his work rate and ball winning down the right. Keeling took the scenic root back through Northampton and left his bag at the ground. Jasper realised he was getting old as the only person that remembered him at his old club was the retired umpire. Lets get some subs and forwards for next week....
