Not sure if there are many lessons to be learnt from Saturday’s outing for the newly created 5s against visitors Northampton. This was a scratch team and it’s difficult to see how many of the day’s line up will be regulars in this side. Having said that, we absolutely smashed the Saints 9-0 with some effervescent play, with some stand out performances from our youngsters. Matt Rogers and James Blenkinsop  were calmness personified at the back and looked very solid, marshalled well by old lags Steve Jones and Mark Stoker. In truth, Sean Mac shouldn’t be playing 5s, but we were grateful he made the journey up from Southampton where he’d been coaching a school team and he stood out like a sore thumb, particularly when reverse stick roofing the ball for our ninth (embarrassed looks all round). Oli Lovibond and Charlie Stoker continued to impress, despite being played out of position, as was Andy Sumser till he retired to attend a birthday party. Nathan Conn is a welcome addition to the club and although rusty, will be a formidable presence in the future, as will be Dave Woodhouse, who is another of those awkward cackhanders. In goal, I resorted to cheering on the Falcons on the other pitch, mostly out of boredom. As a result and many apologies, but I can’t recall all the goalscorers (as I didn’t see them) but can make it up if that helps …
