Ladies' 3s in a great start to the season

13 September 2014, 12:00, Headington School

Ladies' 3s 4 - 0 Oxford Ladies 3s

Let me set the scene….it was a warm Indian summers’ afternoon in the grounds of Headington School. Considering a lot of the team hadn’t played together before, we set off to a great start. Mid first half came a strong switch from Kim to Nicky. With a quick forward pass to Lizzie, she fired the ball to Saskia. The ball was controlled, aimed and then smashed into goal. The second goal developed from a quick free hit by Lizzie. Rosie received it just outside the D then parried it to Beth who timed it perfectly to sweep in a goal. With 1 minute left to go in the first half, the pitch proved its most frustrating when the ball just wouldn’t stop bobbling, particularly in our D. It was at this point we unfortunately gave away a short corner with seconds to spare. It was touch and go, but in the end April made an heroic save on the line, keeping a clean sheet in the first half.

With some fantastic strikes at goal from the forwards, their goalie was getting a pounding. We kept on building up the play, Megan picked up a great ball on the right, dribbled it into the D culminating in goal number 3. The opposition had some lucky breaks when tiredness got the better of us but Olivia performed vital saves. With more attempts at switching the ball, play opened up and there was some smashing support in the middle from Katie and Mel. Subsequently Katie saw the space towards the end of the second half where she went for a solid strike from top D scoring the fourth and final goal. So here’s to next week, the beginning of the league.
