Ladies 4s triumph over Reading 3As in opening match

20 September 2014, 10:30, Banbury Road North (Near)

Ladies' 4s 4 - 1 Reading Ladies 3A

It was a crowded changing room as 16 players arrived for the first league game of the season. There was a slight nervous tension too as players introduced themselves welcoming junior Jen to the squad for the first time and new players Caroline Batten and Lucy Aldred. With a complex system of subbing explained Hawks set out to take the game to the opposition, and that is what happened.  Hawks dominated the first 10 minutes and after early chances went begging a super straight strike from Caroline Batten at a short corner started the scoring.

Hawks continued in confident mode and it was against the run of play when Reading broke away and equalised from a short corner. Not phased however Hawks returned to making good accurate passing moves and there were a number of occasions when Rebecca Black crossed the ball strongly from the right and the other forwards could just not get on the end of it. It was after another period of Hawks domination that Sandra Satterly received the ball on the penalty spot and coolly slotted it home.

The game continued in a similar pattern with Catherine holding the midfield well and distributing with confidence and precision, the full backs closing down any slight counter attacks. The dominance was not converted into goals however and it was still 2-1 as a short corner was awarded on the stroke of half time. A good advantage allowed by the umpire saw the ball fall to Dizzy to strike home and it felt more comfortable at 3-1 as we went into half time.

The second half was similar to the first with Hawks dominating but not able to convert . The only goal being a well worked but slow motion back and fore short corner finished off again by Sandra.  So it was 4-1 at full time , lots of excellent passing patterns down both right and left and chances created. A great start to the new league with plenty of positives but lots of potential to play even better!

Runner up to player of the week was Sophie (T,D and B) however winner was Caroline Batten who showed her quality in the midfield throughout the game.
