Ladies' 1s beat Maidenhead in the Plum

06 September 2014

Ladies' 1s 3 - 2 Maidenhead Ladies 1s

Oxford Hawks Ladies' 1s played their first match of the Plum Tournament against Maidenhead, newly promoted to the National League. Maidenhead started well and Hawks goalkeeper Ria Male was called into action twice early on. Maidenhead then opened the scoring after ten minutes with a fine individual goal from their centre forward. However Hawks responded well and settled into playing some good passing hockey, earning a number of penalty corners. From one corner, Briony Hearn drove right and crossed in for Katie Hewitt who slipped the ball under the keeper to level the scores.

In the second half Hawks stepped up another gear and created a number of goalscoring opportunities, taking the lead with good play through the middle from captain Bex Oakes. Oakes laid off the ball to Kara Haines who crossed to the far post where Hie Sawyer was waiting to score her first Hawks goal. Sawyer put the game beyond Maidenhead's reach moments later, when a pinpoint pass from Becky Hibbert found her at the top of the area. Sawyer drove past her defender and coolly rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net.
