Hawks 4s finish season off with another win

29 March 2014, 12:00, Banbury Road North (Near)

Men's 4s 2 - 0 Gerrards Cross Men's 2s

A beautiful Saturday and the sun was shining for our last game of the season as we were treated to play on the show pitch. And yet, our slightly changed side never really got into our stride against a dogged Gerrard’s Cross 2s and we ended up playing like it was a cross between a training session and a summer friendly game. It might have been due to a couple of hangovers, but although we dominated possession, we tended to go back and across, back and across, rather than forwards. However, we did eventually prevail and won the game 2 nil, and now we have to wait and see whether Marlow HC can overhaul our goal difference – they need 11 goals in their final two games - to see who will be crowned champions.

We started the game confidently enough, with Monkey and Dave Cooke solid at the back, while youngsters Tim W and Robbie S were shown by Scragg Senior how to run the forward line. Tom Forrester was denied by the keeper at a couple of short corners, although again it was the switch move to Minner from a corner that opened the scoring. Despite a skipper’s rant at half time about the lackadaisical way in which we were playing, the searing heat (15 degrees, maybe) of the midday sun must have had an effect and we rarely troubled their keeper, while Boggs in our goal had to remain alert to keep their occasional forays at bay. Indeed, if it wasn’t for some inept finishing on Cross’s part, we might have been in trouble. However, the surprisingly buoyant Will Cairns popped up to finish off an excellent move and calmly score early in the second half to secure the three points.

Undefeated after Christmas, we won ten out of our last eleven fixtures, bizarrely dropping our only points in a draw with rock bottom OMT. This has been another excellent effort by Hawks 4s with three successive promotions and as MBBO Division 3 beckons, there have already been a few murmurs regarding fitness and training in preparation. How I laughed …
