Hawks Ladies 4s had to wait until late in the day for their final fixture of the season against Banbury, away. Many whiled away the hours watching the inspiring wins of the Ladies 2s and 3s whilest others organised their outfits for the team night out…
The match was late starting but Hawks were even later to wake up and play hockey. The first 15mins we seemed to sit back and let them play the ball around. We didn’t look like we wanted to win and desperately needed something to galvanise us into playing well. The catalyst came in the form of a Banbury goal. We were 1-0 down BUT we were ready to play. The next 20 mins saw some great play from Hawks with good movement of the ball and great pressure. The first goal came from a short corner with Vicky smacking the ball into the backboard. The next 2 scores came from excellent pressure from the forwards and inners with ever goal-hungry Sandra putting the ball over the line. We went in to the half-time break 3-1 up.
Both sides had equal chances in the second half. We had some great attacks down the wings but Banbury had their chances too, with their forwards pressing hard through the centre of the pitch. They scored first in the second half following a lot of pressure in the goal, and some great saves by Olivia, one of their forwards lifted the ball over Olivia to make it 3-2. We fought on and despite the failing light we worked the ball forward for Bethany to score a well-deserved goal. This was very fitting, making Beth the first and last goal scorer of the season for the Ladies 4s! Final score 4-2 to Hawks.
There was just time to scoff a bit of cake (thanks Vicky!) and take a quick team picture (thanks Aoife!) before hotfooting it back to Oxford to blue-up for a team Smurf night on the town. MOM votes were collected via WhatsApp, and the 5 people who voted unanimously awarded MOM to Sophie T for her excellent passing and perseverance. Sophie T also achieved the first (and last) green card of the season for a debatable bad tackle. You win some and lose some fantasy league managers!
The Ladies 4s have enjoyed an excellent season and are hopeful of promotion to Trysports Div 1 following their 2nd place finish in Div 2, just 4 points behind Sonning (and 9 goals difference ahead!) and 11 points ahead of 3rd place Marlow. Thank you to the 37 players who have turned out for us this season and the staggering 19 goal scorers who put an impressive 95 balls in the back of the net. I’m already looking forward to next season…..
