The ladies sixths exhibited steely determination and competitiveness against Bucks fourths at scenic Stowe on Saturday. With only 10 players, it could have been a tough game but, rather sportingly, Bucks also played with 10.
Hawks took an early lead with Mary connecting ball and back of net via a solid drive. More followed from both sides resulting in a three-all score line at half time. Early in the second half, Bucks were in the ascendancy, putting the Hawks defence under considerable pressure. Stout performances from a Hawks defence lead by Becky scrambled the ball away time after time. Deborah's determination not to let a ball past her and Jan's super defence on the goal line prevented the Hawks from falling behind. Purdy in goal was on stunning form with both feet and kicked Bucks hopes away time and again. Hawks regained their shape soon after, managing to link defence with midfield, with Mel skilfully driving the ball forward and Ailish showing some style down the wing. The ball was now reaching a rampant Hawks attack lead by Mary in the centre with the support of some great attacking by Maddie. Olivia made run after run through the Bucks defence. Undoubtedly the goal of the match, if not the season, came from a solid drive by Becky into the D, and a first time conversion into the back of the net by Clare - even the opposition declared it "awesome"!
Man of the Match went to Olivia for a tireless work rate, consummate skill and a hat trick of goals. The final result, a well deserved 6-5 to Hawks.
