We were rightly nervous about this game as we honed in on promotion, as playing against students you never really know what you will be up against. Would they field a strong side with three rugby internationals on the telly and copious amounts of beer on tap? Would they be massively hungover after a big Friday night? Would they be up for it and avenge their thrashing earlier in the season when they turned up with only 9 players? Brunel Uni are undoubtedly a talented team, yet their organisational skills leave a little to be desired, but they have great facilities in Uxbridge and the sun was shining, so all was good. Unable to provide two umpires, they suggested switching players to blow every 15 minutes, which would have been a fiasco, but fortunately Tim Spittles was on hand to officiate, which he did with much skill and a very firm hand. The game may have descended into farce had he not been blowing the whistle. He was there primarily to bring Angus along, who didn’t have a game and he was instrumental at centre half to negate their quality in the middle of the pitch. The Uni dominated at the start of the game and created a few very decent chances as they broke at speed, but found Boggs in stellar form. The tax-dodgers didn’t seem too worried at this point as I think they thought they would score eventually, but we did not crumble and indeed opened the scoring as Tom Forrester turned their midfield inside out and drove the ball into the D, where he found both Scraggs waiting. Both got a touch, but it was Scraggy Snr that got the final deflection much to the chagrin of Robbie. We were working tirelessly with Minner and Angus in the engine room, while Jasper and Tom F looked dangerous going forwards. The same pattern continued in the second half, with Boggs soaking up their numerous chances and James Keeling expertly marshalling the stout defence but we kept our composure and eventually scored a second from a well worked corner, as Minner rammed the ball home. The youths looked dejected to lose 0-2, to the point that they never returned to the clubhouse, nor provided teas or beer. Poor show. Nice showers, however, but obviously wasted on them. For us, however, we later found out we have been promoted and with two games remaining need to win both to go up as champions. A very satisfying win and delighted to get our third promotion in a row, alongside Marlow HC.
