The Ladies 2s made the long journey to Brookes to play Oxford 2s in a must win game, in order to stay top of the league. Hawks started strongly, piling the pressure from the first whistle against the Oxford girls, and creating some brilliant attacking chances from Lucy Millington. There was some great play, building from the defence through to the attack where Emily Court retained possession in the D and with a somewhat exceptional reverse stick slap; she slotted the ball past the Oxford goalie. Oxford tried to retaliate by sending a few balls down to the high Oxford attacker, but to no avail with strong defending from Sally Clark and Georgia Perkins. With the sun beating down fearlessly, it started to prove to be a tough test for all playing but Hawks kept on working. Skilful play from Anna Clark found an Oxford foot in the D, getting another short corner for Hawks. Lucy struck hard and flat to find man of the match, Emily Court’s stick, ready and waiting, to grab a deflection sending the ball flying past the Oxford goalie's head. At half time Hawks were 2-0 up.
The second half proved more challenging, with the game slowing down under the sun. However, that didn’t spoil Hawks’ spirit… No way José! With play from the back finding Kara Kerr in the middle, the ball was sent to Kasey Butler who slotted the ball calmly past the Oxford defence, making the final tally 3-0. Hawks soaked up a little bit of pressure from Oxford attack, but we continued to attack throughout the half. All in all, it was a beautiful day to play hockey, to win a game with a fantastic squad, and sets up a huge day next weekend with promotion in sight. Over and out.
