L5s and March Madness
Confidence and performance has been rising in the L5s however we knew this week’s match was going to be a challenge. Division leaders Buckingham L3s had an 80 odd goal difference and when we played them at the beginning of the season we lost 6-1. Mid-week talk was all about defensive strategy and minimising goals conceded. An early away start didn’t really add to the attraction. However it was a beautiful morning and very pleasant drive out to Stowe School to see how the other half lives... Perhaps it was the sense of spring, sunshine and extra degree of focus but by now there was even aspirational talk of a draw! It thus came as something of a surprise that from the off we dominated the play and although April scored a very welcome early goal, we had been there last time so very much stayed on our guard, waiting for Bucks to break through. At half-time, one nil up, we congregated in the goal and stuffed ourselves with Haribos to celebrate the excellent team work. Forwards Emily D, Linda, Lotty and April had been well positioned and had lots of attempts that would have got by a lesser goal keeper. Inners Gabs, Izzy and Jen had worked their (mostly white) socks off, halves Zara, Emily T, Becky J & Buffy had worked very successful in transferring the ball and defence Susan, Gail & Blanche had been solid but challenged and grateful for Megan’s contribution.
As the second half started, we fully expected the Buck’s coach have instigated the necessary change of game plan and were somewhat stunned that most of the play was still in their half. Perhaps they were missing the sugar rush and expert advice from Team Manager Henry? Lotty soon came up trumps and scored a great clean goal. Two nil up, this was almost too good to be true. And yes, before long Bucks got one back through taking a quick free hit which gave little time for our defence to re-glue themselves to their opponents. Oh dear…. Fortunately before long April had a great shot at goal which, with the help of the Bucks GK with sun in her eyes, made it three one for us. Could we hold on? Well, yes we did, and in a rare moment of madness even went on a team warm down run. A very pleasant game and wonderful start to March. Joint man of match was April for her very sporting play and Megan, for being there when we needed her but excellent team play from everyone.Goals, April (2), Lotty
