It was the first league match after the Christmas break for the Ladies 4’s and they played away against Windsor 2’s. Hawks home fixture against this team was on a scorching October day when the score was 2-2. Today the weather was slightly colder, with a small area of the pitch still frozen at push back.

Hawks started the first half strongly, creating some good chances through excellent quick passing between the forward line of Laurie, Linda and Sandra. We were not quite able to convert this pressure. However a run of Hawks short corners allowed a strike by Linda to be deflected into goal by Sophie on the right post. Windsor seemed to clear the ball, but not before it had crossed the line. 1-0 to Hawks. The half continued with Windsor putting a lot of pressure on the Hawks defence. They nearly drew level when goalkeeper Megan got a great foot on a strong strike by Windsor, the ball still continuing towards the goal but Deborah was able to clear it on the line. Unfortunately, Windsor soon did draw level when they took an unchallenged strike from the top of the D which Megan had no chance of stopping. 1-1 at half time.

The second half continued much the same as the end of the first. Windsor had most of the possession although they did not create many clear chances on goal. Hawks were able to defend several short corners well. Hawks struggled to get the ball over their half way line and continuously gave the ball away to the opposition. Against the run of play however, Hawks did win a short corner. They did not manage to score directly from this but soon after a cross from Sophie was nicely picked up by Megan who slotted it over the line. 2-1 to Hawks with 10 minutes to play. Hawks managed to tighten up for the remainder of the game and the whole team defended this tight lead well. The final whistle came just at the right time with Windsor put a goal away just after it had gone (the Hawks defence had stopped of course when they heard the whistle!!). Final score 2-1 to Hawks – not a great performance but a good win.

MOM was Laurie Young and Jane Holmes.
