Ladies 3s narrowly lose out to Banbury Ladies 2s
12 November 2011, 12:00, Banbury Road North (Near)
Ladies 3s 0 - 1 Banbury Ladies 2s
The first 10 minutes of this match were crucial for Hawks as they looked to dictate play rather than react. From the start it was clear that the teams were well matched and possession was key. Staying organised at the back Hawks built their attacks from deep, through the wide half-backs Sally Clark and Laura Scragg. It was clear that there was space behind the Banbury defence and Sophie Bennett's pace was used to open this up. Despite sustained pressure in the final third Hawks were unable to find the touch that would give them the lead.
When Banbury had the opportunity they were threatening up front pushing through extra players from the back to overload the Hawks defence. Some great keeping from Alex Cherry kept the score level.
Both sides won their fair share of short corners but neither were able to convert. The keepers were on fine form taking care of any straight strikes and more complex routines always seemed to fail on the final touch. The score at half-time remained 0-0.
Banbury started strongly in the second half. Within minutes they had won a short corner scoring from a deflected straight strike. From this point Hawks were on the back foot Banbury kept up the pressure looking for a second to consolidate on their lead. Pushed back into their own half Hawks found it difficult to build an attack.
With 5 minutes to go Hawks had one last chance to equalise. Rosie McEwen-Smith broke out of defence releasing Sophie Bennett who sent a fantastic ball through behind the Banbury defence to Helen Robey. As the goalkeeper closed her down Helen slipped allowing the defence to get back in position and clear their lines. The final score 1-0 to Banbury.
