Hawks take on mid table Woking for the first league match of 2012

Hawks were keen to carry on where they left off before Christmas.  The two warm up matches played last week against Banbury ( Won 3 : 1 ) and Oxford Uni ( Won 3 : 0 ) had blown away the Xmas cobwebs.  Hawks started strongly, it took only 5 minutes for Ted Bennet to put Hawks in the lead. A Woking defender was dispossessed on his own 25, two simple passes found Ted at the back post for a simple put in. Within another 5 minutess Joe Brownhill met a Dave Cresswell cross to deflect the ball in from close range. Ted added his second from a narrow angle, smashing the ball high into the net over a grounded keeper. With ten minutes to go Dom Roche picked the ball up just inside his own half on the left, he crossed the half way line, set a diagonal course to the right hand side of the D and scored far post. Half time Hawks 4 Woking 0.

Woking refused to lay down and came back in the second half pressing high.  Hawks did not really get back into their stride.  A speculative aerial was not dealt with by the Hawks defence, somehow the ball got through to a Woking attacker who pulled one back. Hawks struggled to play their free flowing hockey, but did go further ahead after Kieran Roche reverse flicked in after a goalmouth scramble. Kieran Roche was harshly sin binned for 10 mins. after not retreating 5m from a Woking free hit.  With Hawks down to ten men Woking pulled a second back.  With 5 minutes to go Sam Chilvers won a short corner with was duly despatched by King Cresswell. A good result, but Hawks know there are a few gears left.
